Small-town hospitality, for pets.

Steven James has been in the pet boarding business for over twenty years. His first kennel was Royalty Resort for Pets in Middletown, New York — a building renovated into a kennel.

In 2013, Steve decided to build from the ground up a brand new building specifically to be a kennel. Named after the stream that borders our facility, Rutgers Creek has all the little things Steve has learned from his experience at Royalty Resort that make our kennels cleaner, safer, and more fun for our boarders.

"They motivate us to play, be affectionate, seek adventure and be loyal." — Tom Hayden

We accommodate all types of pets, as well as all breeds of dogs, but they must be people-friendly. We administer special diets and medication at no extra cost. We let our boarders out by hand, so they get a personal, human connection and feel safer while staying with us. Dogs that get along can play together outside, always supervised.

What We Offer

Three quiet specialties, done thoroughly.

Rutgers Creek specializes in safe, clean, and fun pet boarding. Whether your dog is with us for a long weekend, a day, or just a bath — they'll be handled, petted, played with, and cared for as if they were our own.

Nº 01

Boarding

Our pet resort has 29 kennels, each four by ten feet — spacious enough that multiple dogs from the same family can stay together. Owners may bring their own food (individually packaged per feeding), or your dog can be fed our dry, bland kennel diet at no additional cost. Beds and toys welcome.

  • 29 kennels, 4ft × 10ft
  • Special diets & medication, no upcharge
  • Hand-walked six times daily
  • Vaccination records required
Nº 02

Daycare

We also offer daycare. The accommodations and care are the same as boarding pets — they're let outside six times a day, played with, and fed or given medications if their schedule falls during the hours they're with us. Perfect for long workdays or the in-between.

  • Same care as overnight boarders
  • Outside six times per day
  • Medications administered on schedule
  • By appointment during open hours
Nº 03

Grooming

Our most common grooming service is a shampoo, conditioner, nail clipping, and ear cleaning — but we also do just baths or just nails. Price varies by the job, size of dog, and difficulty. We usually do these the day of pick-up so your pup goes home clean and ready.

  • Shampoo + conditioner
  • Nail clipping
  • Ear cleaning
  • À la carte or bundled

Come walk the grounds before you book.

We recommend you come for a tour of the kennel prior to boarding — or just to check us out. We can answer all your questions, get paperwork filled out in advance, and help you make your first reservation. We also try to post pictures of every boarder while they stay with us.

Meet the Team

Steven James & the Rutgers Creek crew.

The owner of Rutgers Creek Pet Resort is Steven James. He has his own dogs that stay at the kennel right alongside yours: Chief, a Labrador, and Scoot and Cedar, who are both Jack Russells.

There are five other workers currently at the kennel. Between them you'll recognize faces at drop-off and pick-up — the same crew, day after day. Nobody is passing your dog off to a stranger.

Good to Know

Questions we hear most.

Can't find what you're looking for? Call us at (845) 355-7829 — we'd rather talk it through than have you guess.

What vaccinations do you require?
We require documentation of Bordetella vaccination, Distemper vaccination, Rabies vaccination, and a negative fecal exam within one year. Please bring records at drop-off or email them in advance.
Do you accept cats or other pets?
We accommodate all breeds of dogs, provided they're people-friendly. Unfortunately, at this time we cannot accept cats.
Can my dogs share a kennel?
Yes. Our kennels are a very spacious four foot by ten foot, so multiple dogs from the same family can stay together comfortably.
Can I bring my dog's own food?
Absolutely — but please individually package it per feeding, with your pet's name on each portion. If you prefer, we can feed our kennel food (a dry, bland diet) at no additional cost. Beds and toys are also welcome.
Do you charge extra for medications or special diets?
No. We administer special diets and medications at no extra cost.
When do you do grooming?
We usually do grooming services the day of pick-up so your dog is clean and ready to go home. We also do stand-alone grooming if you'd like to drop off just for a bath.
Should I visit before I book?
We recommend it. Come for a tour — we can answer all your questions, paperwork can be filled out in advance, and you'll be able to make your reservation right then.
When are you closed?
We are closed on New Year's, Easter, the Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
